| Each time you get angry, frustrated or
excited, your blood pressure rises. The human body responds to any threat - economic, physical or psychological, by muscle tension, rising blood pressure and increasing heart rate. But the modern "warrior" has little or no opportunity to react physically, thereby releasing pulse tension. He is left instead with a pounding heart and a soaring blood pressure. Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects up to 40% of the U.S. adult population and can lead to heart attacks, strokes and hardening of the arteries. And 90% of the time, it is directly related to stress. Although our western civilization has long dominated the world, we can learn something from easterners that, for centuries have been combating hypertension with meditation. A doctor at Harvard Medical School adapted the Eastern techniques for use in the hectic West. His volunteers successfully lowered their blood pressures, but only as long as they meditated every day. There are four basic steps:
Meditate for 10 to 20 minutes twice daily, and readjust to work, and the world, slowly after each session. Don't practice within two hours after a meal because digestive processes interfere with the technique. And Patience! It may not work at first, while you are learning to relax, but the technique has helped thousands and it can help you. ~from the Executive Fitness Newsletter~ Submitted by: Harry Updegraff, Jr. |
